Biography
Dr Irene Telias is a trained Intensivist and Internist from Argentina who continued her clinical training and academic career in Critical Care Medicine at the University Health Network-Sinai Health System and St. Michael´s Hospital in Toronto. She obtained her PhD at the Institute of Medical Sciences from the University of Toronto under the supervision of Dr Laurent Brochard (https://research.unityhealth.to/labs/laurent-brochard/). She was recently appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto and a Clinician-Scientist working at Toronto Western Hospital MSNICU.

Her research is focused on understanding the determinants, physiological, and clinical consequences of abnormal patient-ventilator interactions during early mechanical ventilation. Additionally, she contributed to the understanding of neural aspects of the control of breathing. Other research interests include developing innovative, automated, monitoring techniques for modulating control of breathing in critically ill subjects and the interaction between mechanical ventilation and sleep. To this end, she is invested in knowledge translation through collaboration with start-up companies and mechanical ventilation companies internationally to implement these innovative bedside tools for monitoring complex patient-ventilator interactions. Finally, she is also invested in developing and testing new complex clinical interventions based on physiological principles for setting mechanical ventilation to avoid harm in this context (CAVIARDS – RCT // PRACTICAL PLATFORM TRIAL).
