Biography
Dr. Nathalie Van Aerde obtained her master of medicine in 2015 at KU Leuven, Belgium. She combined specialty training in cardiology with an FWO-endorsed PhD in critical care medicine at KU Leuven under the supervision of leading researchers in the field of the post-intensive care syndrome (Prof. Dr. G. Hermans, Prof. Dr. G. Van den Berghe). Nathalie took several credit courses of the master of statistics at KU Leuven to analyze and subsequently publish findings revealing an important impact of prolonged critical illness on post-intensive care morbidity and mortality, both as a consequence of COVID-19 and in the broader context of severe illness. After postgraduate training in ECLS at KU Leuven, Nathalie further persues postgraduate certification in critical care medicine. She completed the first 6 months of critical care training at the University Hospitals of Leuven, a tertiary reference centre for medical intensive care with specific qualification for mechanical ventilation and ECLS. Since February 2024 onwards, Nathalie has joined the critical care teams at the UHN hospitals of Toronto, Ontario, as international fellow for one year.
