Nurse Manager, MSICU Toronto General Hospital

With most of her career in the Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU), Denise has over 25 years of critical care experience in clinical nursing and administration. She holds a Master in Nursing, Administration Stream from the University of Toronto and is a nationally certified critical care nurse through the Canadian Nurses Association. During her time at UHN, she has developed a full time critical care nursing curriculum for Humber College as well as having developed, implemented, and piloted a Critical Care Response Team, an initiative that has since expanded across Ontario. She has also overseen the logistics and further development of the Extracorporeal Life Sustaining Program within the MSICU. Denise is a strong supporter of professional development for staff in the MSICU. Over a two year period, she supported over 40 nurses to successfully obtain their national certification in critical care nursing. In addition, Denise has supported staff participating in Collaborative Academic Practice Fellowships and the Leads Up Program. She has contributed to the sharing of knowledge on early mobilization of ICU patients, wound care, and the ECLS program. Denise’s primary focus has always been on ensuring that patients receive the best possible care that is evidence-based and follows best practice guidelines. She is passionate about creating and sustaining a healthy work environment in the MSICU that not only retains staff but also positions the MSICU as a magnet unit.
